Peppino Camilli, Head Chef at La Parmigiana, has been nominated as Chef of the Year in the Scottish Chef Awards, the most prestigious event in the Scottish culinary calendar.

The nomination follows just weeks after La Parmigiana, the oldest Italian restaurant in Glasgow still in the hands of its original owners, regained its two AA rosettes for culinary excellence.

Mr Camilli, said, “As an Italian, I’m very pleased to be nominated for this award. My background is genuine and sets me apart from some Scottish or French chefs dabbling in Italian cooking who seem to know little about how authentic Italian food should taste.

“I know because I was born in Italy and, as a child, I was taught how to cook properly by my grandmother. My recipes are 100% Italian. I cook pasta today the way my grandmother taught me back in Monte Prandone.”

Peppino Camilli joined Glasgow-based restaurateurs, the Giovanazzi’s, as head chef in 1992 and has been responsible for creating the menus for the family’s restaurants ever since. Having dedicated his working life to the cooking of authentic Italian food, the sustained popularity of La Parmigiana amongst both native Scots and expatriate Italians alike is testament to Peppino’s prodigious culinary talent. Established in 1978 by Sandro’s father, Angelo Giovanazzi, throughout the years La Parmigiana has progressed to become the only Italian restaurant in Scotland to be included in the AA Restaurant Guide, The Michelin Restaurant Guide and the Good Food Guide and has built a reputation as being elegant, yet affordable. La Parmigiana has been the only Italian restaurant in Scotland to be included in the AA Restaurant Guide, The Michelin Restaurant Guide and the Good Food Guide. Most recently, it won The Best Italian Restaurant Award at the inaugural Scottish Restaurant Awards 2008. This award followed La Parmigiana being named as one of only seven Italian restaurants and three pizza restaurants across the UK to have won Gold Awards by the Pizza Pasta & Italian Food Association (PAPA) in recognition of their exceptional standards.

The 13th Annual Scottish Chef Awards 2009 will take place at a gala dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Sunday May 10.
