Gastro Taverns, the Fife-based hospitality group formed last year to offer farm fresh food purchased within a 40 mile radius of its outlets, is up for the long jump, having struck a novel sponsorship deal to help a young athlete from Fife go for gold in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.

Under the terms of the sponsorship package, Gastro Taverns will pay Scottish long jump champion Jude Beimers an annual sponsorship of £5200 to help meet his training expenses on his path to Commonwealth and, perhaps, Olympic glory. Of the sponsorship, Gastro Taverns Managing Director Julian Mobbs said, “As a firm, our whole ethos is all about playing an active part in the local community and helping the local economy by sourcing our produce from local suppliers. We see our sponsorship of Jude as a natural extension of that philosophy and are delighted to have the opportunity to play a small part in helping him realise his ambitions in athletics.”

The sponsorship came about when 20 year old Jude from Glenrothes took on some part-time work as a waiter at Gastro Taverns’ The Sun gastro bar and restaurant in Sun Close, Crossgate, Cupar. When the enterprising young athlete enquired about the possibility of sponsorship, he was delighted to discover that, rather than telling him to take a run and jump, his employer was only too willing to oblige. Jude Beimers said, “This sponsorship will assist greatly with my preparations for the Commonwealth Games in a couple of year’s time.

Whilst I live in Glenrothes, I need to travel regularly to training facilities in St Andrews and Petreavie and the expense can be prohibitive. This sponsorship will help alleviate that financial concern and enable me to focus exclusively on my training.”

Having participated in athletics since the age of 14, Beimers switched from the triple jump to the long jump following an ankle injury some years ago. A former Scottish and UK U20 Champion in the triple jump, he still retains the Under 20 indoor Scottish record for that event.

A member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers and Fife AC, Beimers came third in the triple jump at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia in 2004 and is currently the Scottish long jump champion. His personal best distance is 7m31, whilst the Scottish long jump record is currently 8m01.

In addition to The Sun, other Gastro Taverns’ outlets in Scotland include Mammas Italian Kitchen & Bar, also in Cupar, and The Flaming Kilt in Kirkcaldy.
